INSANE SMALL FRAMEHere is another insane project brought to us from someone with a very warped mind indeed!! A local scooterist who shall remain nameless but for the purpose of this project we shall call him Tricky!
Now Tricky ontained an already cut down frame from another local scooterist who shall also remain nameless (Magoo!!) and in this package came a Rally 200 engine.
''I want a cutdown with a difference'' was his request, ''ok then no probs'' was the reply, '' what did you have in mind'' ''errrr let me see now'' Tricky answered, '' how about utilising this frame and i want the exhaust coming out inline with the rear tyre!!''
ok now you get the idea of how this project came about i will tell the tale of lots of welding, modyfing, cutting, shaping, welding again and of course swearing!!
First up was the engine, we had to modify the ''swing arm'' of the engine to fit in the small frame, once that was done and a set of new engine mounts fitted the cases were split, cleaned and ready for matching, modyfing the carb hole to fit a reed valve system was next then another thorough clean thro, ready for the rebuild with new bearings, oil seals etc.
At the rear of the frame a plate had been previously welded in place, once we fitted the engine we soon realised that this plate for the top of the rear shock was out of line, the engine had to come out again and this plate was cut out, with a new strengthened plate put in place so the the rear shock sat straight.
Next up the exhaust, our friend Tricky gave us a Scorpion pipe, but we had to cut this severly and with it being stainless steel in construction it just wouldnt have looked right, so we swapped it for a swift expansion pipe, which Paul wouldnt feel guilty about cutting it in half, actually once we finished we had cut it in about ten bits, welding here and there, matching up to the frame, more welding, seeing if it fits again, then welding supporting plates and brackets that ''Eagle eyed Roy'' had made.
It looked and was a prefect fit, well done team ATOMS!! Out came the matt black exhaust paint and the exhaust was finished.
Fitting the exhaust was next and tricky had opted for Schwalbe raceman tyres front and rear, then came the road test and Paul was popping wheelies in second!! pukka, off for an MOT then this insane small frame ''SO 80's'' was presented to Tricky, he took it for a run and came back with a smile that was as long as the medway tunnel!!
